The City Solid Waste website provides complete information about pick-up and recycling as well as a range of green services for residents.
WAMM curbside trash and recycling pick-up is managed by the Solid Waste Department. Currently, our weekly regular trash service (black bin) is on Monday and recycling collection (green bin) is every other Monday, except on city holidays when regular pick-up is scheduled for the following day. Type in your address on the city's service map to see the schedules for your pick-up of trash, recycling, and heavy trash. Items not allowed in curbside disposal may be taken to the Environmental Service Centers (see link under Handy Links for full details).
On the first Wednesday of each month, the city offers heavy trash pick-up at the curb. On alternating months, you may place either tree and yard waste or household junk waste at the curb. The two cannot be mixed. Items should be placed out just before the designated pick-up day. Any trash left out weeks or months ahead of time are considered illegal dumping and in violation of city ordinances—not to mention unhealthy and unsightly. Download the fact sheet for details.
WAMM residents can visit the water department webpage for information on water leaks, start/stop or pay for service, drinking water issues, and other public works concerns. The most effective way to report problems requiring immediate attention such as, water main breaks, sewer line blockages/breaks and other issues requiring immediate action is using the 3-1-1 reporting system.
Whether you need to get rid of stuff or are looking for items for projects or crafts, there are options to reduce the waste stream. Donate to charity organizations (some will pick up clothing and small household goods at your doorstep). Visit the City of Houston ReStore which acts as a book swap, a recycling information library, as well as a repository for craft items and post consumer and post industrial scrap. It is located at ESC–South. Another option is Houston Habitat for Humanity ReStore for supplies or donations.
